Review
Why do we always enjoy seeing these two heroes team-up in stories? You’d think with them both being so different, they’d kind of cancel each other out and we’d be left with just, bland crimefighting. But author Gene Luen Yang knows how to combine their two styles perfectly. While each character is allowed to be themselves and not get bogged down in arguing about which crimefighting style is the right way to do it, he does let each character play to his strength here, and what you get is a very entertaining story, One that is both unique and fits like a comfy old pair of sneakers, The story itself is really entertaining. Honestly, it’s one that could be told in either this future setting or, with some slight reworking, in the present-day, Giving the story a little bit of a timeless element is part of what makes this story so entertaining. Not only does Yang have the characters down pat, but he’s also got the world down pat, and with that, any story he tells is going to be pretty damn entertaining,
Giving Yang a run for his money is artist Ben Oliver. Oliver’s style is just like Yang’s, timeless, Yes, the scenery is futuristic and the costumes have changed, but there are so many similarities to classic Batman and Superman stories. From the way they “move” to the way they carry themselves both in battle and in scenes with little to no action, Oliver hasn’t really been on my radar, and shame on me for that, I’m going to be on the lookout for books that he’s on and pick some up. This art is too good to be missed.
