Ghost-Spider #2
Recap
Enrolled in college, new friends, Miles Warren shows up, and Man-Wolf is a free man, just another day in the life of Gwen Stacy. Oh yeah, and her symbiote needs to be fed a diet rich in cellulose.
Review
Ok, here we are two issues into Ghost-Spider and are seeing Gwen in a light that is familiar but, is letting her spread her wings and fly a bit. We left off in issue #1 with her bumping into Miles Warren and on the last panel seeing Miles admitting to a new plan to mass-produce the Jackal gene. Enter issue 2 and Gwen finding out that her Earth-65 mortal enemy Man-Wolf has been set free! Did you really think a Jameson was going to stay locked-up?
Now we’re back in Earth-616; on top of Empire State University noshing on some kale chips, so her symbiote can thrive in her new lifestyle of multiverse traveling. Now as a purveyor of kale chips, I whole-heartedly endorse this new take on Ghost-Spider! We get briefly introduced to two new “companions” of Gwens; Kosei and Benji. Now for anyone who has ever read anything Spider related the brief meetings (I’m looking at you Kosei) never end up being good. As for Benji, well see my previous statement, as the book concludes, we find out that Benji is in cahoots with Miles Warren…see I told they never end up good. The last panel shows Miles telling Benji, to “befriend her, and learn her secrets and I’ll give you what you want”. Not a huge cliffhanger, but enough to make the story interesting and cementing a need to come back for issue three.
Final Thoughts
Ever since Ghost-Spider came to Earth-616 she has fully immersed herself into its bravado, and Seanan McGuire captures it brilliantly. In this issue we continue to see Gwen’s growth in dealing with multiverse traveling, leaving her dad behind in Earth-65, and not mention kale chips! Adding to her new-found stress is Miles Warren. Now, this might be the Spider-Nerd in me coming out, but seeing The Jackal just makes this issue that much better, and the need for issue three to hurry up and get here that much greater. Overall, I thought this issue was pretty good and does a good job at laying a decent foundation for Gwen’s future in Earth-616.
