Review
Godzilla Destroys The Marvel Universe #1 kicks off the King Of The Kaiju’s reign of destruction in the 616. The story is unconnected to the previous oneshots which had Godzilla confronting various heroes throughout Marvel history. This feels like a missed opportunity as it could have led to less exposition and it would have been a simple leap for the heroes to already have a history and knowledge about Godzilla’s existence.
This aside there are plenty of exciting action moments throughout such as Godzilla decimating the Celestial in the middle of NYC. There are also plenty of humorous moments that work, such as The Thing biting Godzilla and some that don’t like Quicksilver’s banter as he is grabbing civilians as the rampage unfolds. Duggan does a good job dealing with the large amount of characters, with The Fantastic Four taking the spotlight for most of the issue, with The Avengers coming in a close second.
The story follows some expected tropes like The X-Men being offer planet (at least for now) and the big guns, like Doctor Strange being in disposed and not able to join in this initial confrontation, the next wave of heroes joining in the fight next issue (Deadpool, Spider-Man characters, Iron Man, and the street-level heroes Luke Cage, Iron Fist , and Daredevil).
Garrón’s art is good although there are some panels where some characters look a bit distorted or off spec. Aside from this the panel layouts show dynamic and flowing action one would expect from a story of this magnitude.
Final Thoughts
Godzilla Destroys The Marvel Universe #1 the openinng salvo in the story is a solid start to this meeting of Godzilla and the heroes of the Marvel Universe and is full of potential as the story unfolds and develops over the six issues run.
