Review
Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre #2 finds Gatsby and his team of literary characters looking to take the fight to Godzilla. The rag tag group joining Gatsby are Sherlock Holmes, The Time Machinist (H.G. Wells), the part man, part cyborg Jules Verne, Daisy, and her husband Tom Buchanan.
Gatsby and his team embark from London with the M.A.S.E.R. invented by Edison. Once under water, it’s not long until Godzilla arrives and the fun and destruction begin. Through Gatsby, Scioli gives a quick recap of everyone involved and why they are part of the team.
Scioli manages to sprinkle humor throughout, especially when the team make a stand against the Kaiju in Paris, using the monuments in some really nifty and unique ways. The cast of the the literary characters also expands as Dracula gets involved and Sherlock faces the blood sucker.
Sciloi’s art, most notably the large splash pages of the monster in the water and destroying iconic landmarks continues to be on point and a refreshing plus for the issue. The muted color tone also is a plus for the overall aesthetic and feel of the book.
The issue sets the stage for what is sure to be an epic final issue that will continue to play with Gatsby and other well-known and loved characters in a new way.
Final Thoughts
Godzilla's Monsterpiece Theatre #2 is a fun read that continues to take these well-known characters and places them against an unstoppable foe who has terrorized lesser opponents in other mediums. This series continues to be a fun experience and experiment in pushing boundaries of storytelling.
