Godzilla's Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: Romeo & Juliet #1: But Soft, What Kaiju Through Yonder Window Stalks

The Comic Watchers – Episode 309: Adam Tierney – Godzilla, 13 Demons Dead, and Afraid Of Everything

Homer’s The Odyssey is widely considered to be the greatest epic of all time. So, how could you possibly make it more epic?

Fill it with kaiju, that’s how. Odysseus’ journey home was already challenging enough, but what if instead of storms, sirens, and cyclopes, the gods sent monsters even more powerful than the titans?

And what if Zeus sent the most powerful one of all to assist the king on his odyssey? It’s like Homer said: “Of all creatures that breathe and move upon the earth, nothing is bred that is stronger than Godzilla.”

Review

Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: The Odyssey is the latest installment festuring the King Of Monsters inserting himself into some of the classics of literature. This time the Kaiju and friends find themselves inserted into one of the great stories of Greek/Roman mythology. T

The Odyssey is a story well-known story that most have been exposed to not only on in the classroom, but has been adapted and used throughout all forms of entertainment, with the new motion picture set for release soon. Like the previous installments this issue takes liberties with the Godzilla mythos but puts it’s own spin on how the monsters are integrated into the narrative.

Tieri kicks the Godzilla goodness off on the first page, replacing the Trojan Horse with a full-sized Trojan Godzilla and hits all the important story establishing points of explaining the war, the events happening back in Odysseus’ home, and establishing the role the gods play and how they are the ones manipulating the Kaiju that serve at the behest of the gods.

Unlike the previous stories, the characters understand that the monsters are part of the gods machinations, be they for good or as a foil. The inclusion of the monsters feels natural in the story and unforced, as absurd monsters aee regular, run-of-mill occurances in mythological stories.

The creative team treats the original material with the reverence it deserves but also shows the lighter sides of the characters especially the gods. The art and colors work well with the story being told and set the stage in a believable environment that the adds to the overall reading experience.

The backup story continues and concludes Tom Scioli’s Robin Hood / Godzilla mashup which as expected, is executed to a tee… leaving the reader wanting more in the future.
