Review
Gotham City Sirens issue three is the best one yet! Picking up from last week’s events, the Sirens find themselves battling a video game-themed terror, thanks to Punchline’s plan. This issue is, without a doubt, my favorite so far.
Williams does an amazing job mixing modern internet humor with commentary on the gaming world and its reflection of contemporary culture. The theme of “pay to win” is prevalent throughout the series, not just in a gaming sense but also in highlighting the divide between the elite and the rest of the world. Williams clearly understands these characters; her continued portrayal of Punchline is spot on, and her characterization of Poison Ivy is particularly strong in this issue. The relationship between the characters is handled with care and feels genuine. The flirty banter between Ivy and Harley is especially well done.
Williams also excels at writing action scenes, utilizing all the Sirens to their fullest potential. We see some fantastic moments with Catwoman stepping into a leadership role, and Harley showing off her protective side. Best of all, we get to see Ivy diversify her powers, using cacti in creative ways that perfectly fit the desert environment they’re in.
The art by Matteo Lolli is truly spectacular in this issue. Each character shines under Lolli’s artistry. He excels at illustrating Poison Ivy’s plant powers, and his varied styles complement this wacky series well. If I had to choose one aspect of Lolli’s work that stands out the most, it would be the facial expressions and details. The Sirens are in a dire predicament at the start of this issue, and as the story progresses, Lolli’s talent for conveying emotions through facial expressions becomes evident, allowing us to see the suffering and confidence of the characters at just the right moments.
Final Thoughts
Gotham City Sirens continues to be a wonderful ride, with fantastic moments and beautiful art work and I sincerely hope we get more for Williams after this weekly series ends next week.
