Green Arrow #27

Recap
Ollie races against time as he tries to figure out who this new lethal foe is.
Review
Chris Condon’s latest offering of his Green Arrow series continues to entertain and astonish. As Ollie continues to right his wrongs for not only himself, but also his as well. We also start to see his duality emerge. Condon beautifully navigates this like an admiral at sea! With this incarnation of Green Arrow, we are not just witnessing a vigilante jump from building to building in the shadows, waiting to pounce. We are seeing a tortured soul battling with who he used to be and who he wants to be. Each day he’s reminded of what he’s done, be it good or bad, his drive to make amends knows no end. Come hell or high water, Ollie will embody a new empathetic self.
Montos’ visual representation co-pilots the script and narrative. The dark, brooding cityscapes and expressions of the characters grab us and immerse us in Ollie’s world. The way Montos uses vibrant colors, especially with horizons, sunsets, etc, serves as a stark contrast to the grim reality of the streets, while reinforcing the discovery of the Crimson Archer. Visually turning the prose into a visual adventure. From the first panel to the last, the art and writing work in harmony to deliver a powerful tale of redemption, responsibility, and the enduring hope for a new beginning. It’s stories like these that reinforce why we love superheroes. The never-ending quest for a better society.
Final Thoughts
This series continues to be dark, moody, and brooding, overfilling with raw emotion; masterfully capturing who and what Green Arrow is. I think this arc also brings to light a person’s internal struggles and the weight of responsibilities. If this series is in your “to be read pile,” move it to the very top, and enjoy the ride.
