Review
Green Arrow‘s “Crimson Sands,” Part Five is a fantastic showcase for both the writing of Chris Condon and the art of Montos and Adriano Lucas. This issue perfectly blends intense action without skimping on the introspective soul-searching. This is something that Condon continues to execute flawlessly; he knows Ollie’s soul inside and out.
The writing truly shines in its depiction of Oliver Queen. Condon grounds Green Arrow’s vigilante mission in genuine, personal motivation. The flashbacks perfectly capture the vital context of Oliver’s monologue when it comes to his relationship with his bow and arrow. In pure Olly fashion, his cold but insightful “An arrow is versatile. It can become anything…” Condon continues to masterfully choreograph a supporting cast that feels so cohesive, it keeps the reader mesmerized, panel after panel.
Visually, this issue is a masterclass in mood and execution. Lucas, Montos, and Beaudoin deliver such an energy to the book, making Green Arrow’s movement look so fluid, whether he’s scaling walls or cleaning house with explosive arrows. Fabulous. One of my favorite moments is the multi-panel sequence where he destroys the vital vials of serum; the explosive colors erupting from the pages and the green silhouette of Green Arrow make for some delectable eye candy! From the sun-drenched chaos of the flashback jungle to the neon-drenched modern city, the art is expressive and captures the emotional weight of the story.
