Recap

HAL JORDAN VS. SINESTRO—NOW MORE DANGEROUS THAN EVER! It’s come down to this! Hal Jordan, Earth’s Green Lantern, finally faces off against his former mentor, Sinestro, whose power to instill fear has been replaced with an elemental rage that could level the planet he once swore to protect.

Review

This week’s Green Lantern is here, by rising star writer Jeremy Adams, and superstar artist Xermanico! It’s Hal Jordan versus Sinestro! The newest Red Lantern! Sinestro is filled with RAGE! All the while the Ferris Air drones are still under Sinestro’s control, aimed at high populated cities to help stir up fear from the human population to power through the barrier embargo the United Planets placed around Sector 2814, effectively cutting him off from returning to his home planet Korugar! So without further delay let’s get to it!

See? I told you.

I know, I’ve used a lot of exclamation points here, but I can’t help it. Adams’ take on Hal, bringing him back to earth, and giving him a life again that doesn’t revolve around the Green Lantern Corps has just revitalized the character in ways I thought we’d never see from Hal again. In the age where we’ve grown to expect universe shattering events in every single issue, we’ve forgotten what originally brought us to these characters in the first place: the human behind the mask. And this is Adams’ biggest strength thus far. He just gets Hal. Yeah, there’s a ton of action that happens in this issue. I mean, you’ve got Sinestro literally vomiting blood constructs that are attacking the Air Force’s pilots and planes, but it’s the human behind the mask that grabs me with every issue in this run.

Speaking of the human being behind the mask, the ending really hurt. Finding out one of the most beloved non-human Green Lantern’s is no more packs one hell of a punch, and not something that was to be expected. Will this be the actual end of this character? Most likely not. This is comics, and except for Uncle Ben, no character is actually dead for good, but it’s still quite the surprise. It also lends one to wonder what Hal’s mental state is that he created a construct of this character to keep him company as he tries to re-establish himself here on earth. How’d he die? From that cliffhanger it’s a safe bet that Adams will tell everyone in the upcoming issue, but it’s going to drive the fans wild, because it’s driving me wild.

Breathtaking.

Xermanico and Scott Godlewski’s on art duties with this issue, and it’s a visual smorgasbord. Xermanico continues to create some of the most breathtaking scenes I’ve seen in quite some time. The constructs are just out of this world. Meanwhile Scott Godlewski isn’t no slouch either. I had to double check who was on art duties, because the art and details just flowed seamlessly, that I didn’t figure it out until the last couple pages. Just top notch stuff, and the fans are going to eat this run up.

Final Thoughts

Jeremy Adams and Xermanico’s Green Lantern continues to plant Hal’s feet firmly on the ground, as they rebuild his life on earth, as well as his role as the Green Lantern of earth. We still don’t know where his ring comes from, or why he can’t escape earth’s atmosphere, but it’s still early in the run. Scott Godlewski’s the guest artist, and he brings his a-game here. Just a visually stunning book all around.
