Recap

HAL JORDAN TRAPPED… ON EARTH! Unable to leave the atmosphere, the Green Lantern looks for help from a mystical source, which leads him to a mysterious gateway and surprising answers to the origin of Hal's ring.

Review

Jeremy Adams and Xermanico continue their fan-favorite run on Green Lantern, as they’ve re-established Hal’s place on earth, given him a job at Ferris Air, as well as making him a Lantern again with a very unconventional ring. He’s brought Hal face to face with a desperate, and ringless Sinestro, who puts millions of lives at risk in order to re-energize the fear to help him escape the blockade the United Planets placed around earth, as well as the rest of Sector 2814, to keep its influence from infecting the rest of the universe, and we find out that the Kilowag that Hal’s been with since his return has been a hallucination, as the real Kilowog is dead! So let’s get on with this issue.

After a long nine months of Hal attempting to rebuild his life, Hal follows a dark cavern down to a world inside of earth where he meets up with his original best friend and sidekick Tom Kalmaku. It’s here that Tom hints at a connection between the Green, a magical force that connects all plant life around the world, and as of this issue, across the universe, as it might be one of the sources of the metal that’s responsible for the rings themselves. This could be really good, depending on the quality of the finale. Not only did we get this little nugget, we also get a clue to what’s the next big thing, and it looks like it’s going to be called THE MILLENNIUM!!

Okay, so I don’t know DC & Marvel have been putting out some storylines that are reusing old events from a bygone era, but unfortunately we’re just having to go with the punches. But there is one glimmer of hope, and his name is Jeremy Adams. Adams has a proven record of being one of the most nostalgic writers, who has this ability to make the story more than just a superficial copy of an 80’s or 90’s storylines, but if anyone can make it work, it’s Jeremy. It’s his calling card, and something he uses to great effect.

Adams’ Hal has been a real treat to read. He’s full of personality, and humanity. Cocky, arrogant, and mischievous, yet still so very interested in being a champion for those who aren’t able to protect themselves. It’s such a core tenet of who Hal, and the rest of the DC superhero community is. It’s this throwback ideology that Adams reintroduces to a modern comic medium. In a world full of doom and gloom, or the 175th deconstruction of Daredevil, we’ve got this Silver Age nugget to be a beacon for the rest of the capes crew.

Final Thoughts

Adams’ Hal stresses on his humanity, giving us a man behind the mask, and lets us in to see behind his eyes. These two have really given us the most grounded Green Lantern I’ve read in quite sometime, and I’m loving them for it.
