What You Need to Know:
Jessica has been trapped into reliving a terrible memory in her past. She has traveled back to a hunting trip with three of her friends. They witness two Gangsters disposing of a body in the woods, and soon they are running for their lives from the Mafia Assassins.
One by one her friends are cut down as they tried to escape the forest, but Jessica managed to hide behind a tree. There she found the abandoned ring of the Villain Volthoom (Evil Green Lantern from a different Earth). Jessica possesses the ring and routs the men.
This is the memory that Jessica has repressed an is the source of her anxiety and mental state. In an effort to exploit this Memory and feed off of the illicit anguish, Singularity Jain has sent Jessica Cruz into the Past memories of herself via a Portal, and to save her Simon Baz has followed.
A memory of just before their current mission shows us the Science cell holing station that Simon Baz has taken residence in after he left Earth. Jessica cannot help but scold him for his messy lifestyle, and they remind each other that they are very much in this together, and they charge their rings together.
What You’ll Find Out:
Singularity Jain has aide a great deal of trouble for the Justice League. They enlisted the help of the Mystic John Constantine to help Jessica’s sister Sara. Simon Baz was able to enter the realm and confront Volthoom and attempt to rescue Jessica. Simon had to enter without his ring and is at the mercy of the foes that he finds in the Memory.
Constantine is able to sneak away in the midst of the turmoil and help Sara keep safe.
What Just Happened?
Simon reaches Jessica after he gets past the armed criminals. He advises them to not let her see their faces, and they run off. Possessed by the power ring, Jessica is not herself and is violent and unpredictable. Simon, who fought his doppelganger to get here, and is powerless can only reach Jessica by speaking with her. Simon attempts to talk her down from murdering the two men that have just killed her three companions.
Simon manages to appeal to Jessica, after a few words and is eventually set free. They manage to break free of Singularity Jain’s trap, and then set forth to free the rest of the League from her clutches.
Jain loses control, the League emerges from her Mouth, and Jessica returns to normal. As the characters emerge from Jain, the Lanterns are having their own moment. Simon put in a great risk, by entering the Singularity, and Jessica thanks her partner for his efforts. The hold hands (just a little bit too long, and the story rolls forward next time.)
Rating: 7/ 10
Final Thought:
A fitting ending to the Origin story for Jessica. I feel that with Batman we always get the Origin story. This does seem more of a Children’s Story, or possibly the plot to a My Little Pony. Regardless, Simon breaks out of captivity and is able to save his friend Jessica. I am happy to see the future transition of the character’s from this run into the next one. I recommend this title to those looking for a easy way into the Green lanterns mythos.
