Grimm Fairy Tales #34: This is War

The explosive conclusion to the War of Neverland is here, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint!

For the last few issues, we have been building to this very conflict with Skye forced to lead her acquired forces against evil incarnate to put a stop to the portal bringing more forces over and leave Neverland in peace once more. With the inclusion of Tiger Lily and Belle, it finally seemed like she had enough strength on her side to quell the opposing forces, but war is hardly ever predictable.

This issue succeeds on multiple levels, but it manages to both conclude an ongoing arc that we have been following and set up a new journey ahead with remarkable skill. Climactic issues like this are too often forced to either conclude a story or set up a new one and the balance is lost, creating a jumbled issue at best. But Grimm Fairy Tales #34 brings a satisfying close to the War of Neverland while also taking Skye to Wonderland in a way that is both natural for the story and more importantly, enjoyable!

Now that we have Skye fully adorned in the armor cast from Stephen’s Father, also named Hephaestus during the Age of Camelot for none other than King Arthur himself, the story is poised to take a wild turn at any moment. If you will remember a few issues back, this suit of armor was described to have the power to transport an entire town. With Skye being forced into Wonderland in order to save Stephen, it seems to only be a matter of time before this spell is utilized.

The artwork from Julius Abrera and Jorge Cortes is a step above what we saw last issue, which is definitely a positive. With the War of Neverland raging on, there are plenty of opportunities to shine all throughout Grimm Fairy Tales #34 and this creative team capitalizes on most of them. The colors in this latest arc can sometimes become distracting though, often reaching vibrancy that clashes with the more solemn themes in the story. Despite this, the visuals are a ton of fun to look at. The characters are consistent and the action spot on. It’s a solid continuation for the Grimm series after all is said and done.

Overall, Grimm Fairy Tales #34 is a strong conclusion for the War of Neverland arc, kicking off yet another intriguing story this time set in Wonderland. As Skye traverses the realm of dreams, it seems the series will build more on these events for an even more exciting story to come!
