Grimm Fairy Tales #35: Before it’s Too Late

Kicking off a new Wonderland arc (before the Revenge of Wonderland), Grimm Fairy Tales #35 is a multilayered story that follows up on the dramatic ending of last issue, and puts Skye in a particularly dangerous position as she tries to rescue those who have been kidnapped.

This is an exciting issue to be sure. The strength of the story is fundamentally in its ability to lay the foundation for an epic confrontation rather quickly. While the villain and the Grail is an interesting plotline, it’s Skye that I really care about. Her venture through Wonderland has a dark twist that really makes things curiouser and curiouser.

The armor from Hephaestus that has played such a large role recently has a new layer introduced with its ability to contain and utilize the power of the Grail. This development is exciting as we see Skye assemble all of these pieces to gain nearly immeasurable power and it helps to create anticipation as we wait for her to finally unleash it.

The artwork  from Lima, Cortes and Araujo is a bit varied in its approach, but how vibrant everything is allows the visuals to pack a solid punch. The devastation in Wonderland is a true high point for the artwork as the storms and chaos tear through the area. Moving from one extravagant landscape to the next, we see a fantasy filled epic taking shape in both the new arc and stretched across the arcs building up to this as well.

As a first issue in a new arc, there is a lot of exposition to set everything up that will be coming in the story. While it’s not enough to ultimately harm Grimm Fairy Tales #35, it is noticeable. Luckily, Taylor Esposito’s fluid lettering helps to keep both the pacing and flow enjoyable all throughout. There is a lot of history to unpack and consequences to examine, and the issue does a great job of fleshing that out without feeling burdened by the information.

Grimm Fairy Tales #35 is an excellent setup for a new arc that builds on the events that got us to this moment. Fans of Wonderland will absolutely want to check this story out, but for fans of Skye and Grimm Fairy Tales, this will be an important building block for some awesome moments to come.
