Recap

Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw launch their stellar new Guardians of the Galaxy series with a funeral for a Titan. In true Thanos fashion this isn't a funeral so much as a reveal of his true plans, his conciousness has been downloaded into a new body, there's a new Thanos in town, before the star studded congregation can react The Black Order attacks, riding the mobilized Knowwhere, the ancient head of a dead Celestial!

Review

Wow! What a phenomenal entry into a new era for the Guardians of the Galaxy! i will admit to having skipped Infinity Wars, Warps, The Black Order and such, but I knew Thanos died and how and hit the ground running with that knowledge and followed along fine. I really liked the idea of Thanos using his own funeral as a big ol’ f*** you to his foes, thumbing his nose from beyond the grave.

I loved the funeral in general with the gigantic collection of cosmic marvel heavy hitters, most of them just there to make sure Thanos was dead. I felt like the formation of the team, out of necessity in a time of peril, felt pretty organic and i love the lineup. I really can’t wait to see what happens next issue.

The art by Cates’ God Country co collaborator Geoff Shaw is typically fantastic, he’s so talented! Really though if you haven’t read God Country, go do it now! Shaw does exactly as well as one might expect, in the gigantic congregation i feel like he really shines where many artists might take it as an opportunity to slack a little.

The colors by Marte Gracia are very dynamic, especially when *redacted for spoiler throws his *redacted for spoiler to get *redacted for spoiler out of *redacted for spoiler, saving the team.
