Review

This book is all over the place. Now, normally that’s a bad thing, but in this case, it’s exactly the opposite. Author Al Ewing not only gives everybody a perfect amount of their own stories in this book, but he also gives the Guardians, as a team, the right amount. Ewing dies a great job at juggling everything he needs to storywise, and it makes this issue really good. There are a couple of things that I would’ve liked to have seen a little more of, like Hercules and Rocket, but I have a feeling they’ll be the focus of upcoming issues. Much of this issue is a balancing act of dealing with the events of the last two issues and setting up the next storyline for the Guardians, which is revealed in an amazing last page shocker. Ewing has brought a real breath of fresh air into the Guardians’ universe. While the stories might not be as up-beat as past creators have made them, they still have that “we’ll get through this” attitude that has come to represent the team.

There are four artists and four inkers on this issue. You can definitely tell when some of them end and others start, but for the most part, the book has a cohesive flow to it that some books draw I’ve read that have had a single artist on them. As well as normal team activities, there are some very intimate character chapters that are handled beautifully. Not much action this issue, but plenty of stuff to chew on.  A very awesome looking book.

Final Thoughts

A pretty solid issue. Moves the story along, and even better than that, it gets us a little more familiar with the characters, shedding some light on things we might not have already known.
