Recap

The Guardians of the Galaxy bumble their way into a battle with the Dark Guardians in defense of Gamora, who maintains that Thanos is pulling shenanigans with the whole identity thing. Beta Ray Bill has a good moment and something happens maybe probably.

Review

The pacing of this series continues to lurch forward after a slow start with an issue long fight and barely any plot. I guess we’ve kinda confirmed Gamora isn’t Thanos? Not really though, maybe it’s Rocket and that’s why we can’t see him. Speculation is seemingly pointless although knowing Cates we could already be getting clues, I haven’t noticed any as of now.

There are a lot of beautiful pages like this one with a half dozen silent team members

Although there were a couple solid character moments the majority of characters on both teams either have little or no speaking parts, and do almost nothing in some cases. A complaint I’ve heard from a couple people is the series’ total lack of establishing power sets, character’s names in some cases, or clear motivations. All of this boils down to a case of too many characters I feel. So much wasted panel space that could be devoted to something actually happening.

The art by Geoff Shaw continues to be great, and makes the book worth getting on his merit alone.

I LOVED this page

I’m sorry to he so negative but I’m just really not feeling this series. I read plenty of other Cates series and think he’s a phenomenal writer. I just think this series requires focus. I will continue reading and I have genuine hope it will improve.

I dinged the cover a couple points for portraying Cosmic Ghost Rider as a team member. It is a really good cover in reality.

Final Thoughts

I'm gonna keep buying this series in the hopes it tightens it's focus, but as of now it's a little tough to follow at times.
