Recap

Review

I really didn’t care for this issue and I wish I could tell you exactly why but I really can’t. I’m not keeping it a secret, I just haven’t really decided myself. So, author Al Ewing steps out of his normal storytelling formula, which is fine to do, and I think he’s trying to make things a little more sophisticated, I guess, but to me instead of being a bold new exciting story, it left me confused and angry with myself because I didn’t quite understand a few things that happened this issue. The issue is mostly about Moondragon, and I’ll be upfront and honest, she’s not a character that I really care about. Also, this whole “two teams of Guardians” thing needs to end, already. Either combine them into one team or put them in separate books. They interact, but only to fight with each other, and the question of “why do they hang out in the same place” practically screams at you off the page. Al Ewing is the absolute master of “WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!” storytelling, but this issue had me saying that in a bad way, not the usual good/exciting way.

Sigh. Oh boy. So, artist Juann Cabal doesn’t really help the issue. The book focuses on interactions between the Moondragons of two universes and art-wise, it’s confusing as heck. There were times I wasn’t sure which one was which, sometimes one looked like the other, there are some pages that he does this circle panel thing that totally doesn’t work. I really wish in this case he would’ve stuck to the more traditional style of storytelling because I think it would’ve made the story more accessible. Hopefully next issue he’ll switch things up a bit from his work on this issue.

Final Thoughts

This issue is a mess. I honestly can't recommend it. Both art and story are not only sub-par, they do not live up to the creators' talents.
