Review

Hack/Slash, Tim Seeley, and Stefano Caselli’s gorey, yet addicting long-running series is back with a fresh take with Zoe Thorogood at the helm for Hack/Slash: Back to School #1. Zoe Thorogood writes and illustrates the latest bloody installment and spares no expense in storytelling and masterful visuals that make the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

The book opens up with Cassie Slash and her new friend…err acquaintance Vlad; whom she mistook for a slasher. Soon all hell breaks loose, blood flows like the Nile, and body parts are everywhere. As Cassie and Vlad are processing what is going on, we are introduced to Darla Ritz who runs the Hunters for Hire & Darla Ritz’s Academy for Girls. As Cassie starts to digest all that has happened, she’s introduced to the girls of the academy and their personalities which couldn’t be farther from each other. It’s like a deranged X-Mansion for serial killer hunters, and I’m here for it.

Hack/Slash #1: Back to School has great pacing and balance. With horror comics, you sometimes see an imbalance between story and gore, but this isn’t the case here. Zoe does a great job in directing the motion of the story while incorporating creepy visuals. It’s not often you see a sword go through someone’s face in neon colors. Brilliant! I love that Hack/Slash is back on the shelves, even if it’s only for a short time, and I love the vision that Zoe Thorogood has for the series. Even if you’re not familiar with the series, this is a great time to jump onboard and join in the bloody fun that is Hack/Slash.

Final Thoughts

Zoe Thorogood spins a great yarn for this beloved horror series and I hope we see more. Just in time for spooky season, Back to School has something for everyone.
