Title: Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #49 (Last Charge pt. 2: Disrupted)
Writer: Robert Venditti
Pencils: Rafa Sandoval and Sergio Davila
Inks: Jordi Tarragona
Colors: Tomeu Morey
Letters: Dave Sharpe
Publisher: DC Comics

What You Need to Know:

The Green Lantern Corps has been ousted as the primary police force in the universe by the murderous Darkstar Corps. The Darkstars spread across the universe through superior numbers and tactics, boasting a singular mind, their hatred amplified telepathically through each other. They only have one goal, every criminal must die!

The Green Lanterns have gathered an assortment of allies and enemies, some taking objection with the policies of the enemy, some fearing for their lives, now a final offensive has been mounted against the Darkstars home planet, the tides are turning!

What You’ll Find Out:

We open on The Green Lantern Corps, led by Kilowog, defending Mogo from a full-scale assault, fighting alongside the Guardians. We cut to space sector 1, the former homeworld of the Controllers, who planned to subjugate the Darkstar Corps before being telepathically overpowered by their Corps. Arkillo, Zod, Orion, Kyle, and Guy are fighting back an enormous horde. John Stewart surveys both battles remotely from afar, waiting to spring his trap.

Hal Jordan stands in the core of the Darkstar homeworld with Hector Hammond, preparing to take down the Controllers. Hammond offers to quickly kill them all, Jordan refuses and Hammond telepathically overpowers half a dozen Controllers in an instant. The second they are taken down the Darkstars double over in pain, their link severed they lose most of their tactical advantage. Tomar Tu, instantly realizing the Green Lanterns’ plan, calls the Darkstars back to their home planet to play defense, John Stewart springs phase 2 of his trap.

You’ll have to discover the rest of this issue yourself, it’s phenomenal!

What Just Happened:

Holy crap, the end of Venditti’s run is hitting top end! Holy crap again even the lettering is better than any other book around! The story is working towards its inevitable conclusion, with Tomar Tu and Hal defending their respective Corps ideals with their lives. I am loving this arc, it’s the perfect conclusion.

If I have a complaint about this arc it is a bit predictable, mostly because it’s so perfectly set up, with plot points going back dozens of issues and almost the entire final battle telegraphed months ago.

I love how easily Hammond overpowered the Controllers, hysterical. Likewise, the Darkstars walked into that trap quicker than a drunken Thor, king of stupidly blundering into traps. I guess that makes Tomar Tu king of kings who stupidly blunder into traps, haha.

The art in this issue, penciled by Rafa Sandoval and Sergio Davila, was amazing as has been usual this series. It seems like the entire art staff has stepped up for the end of this series. I don’t know why I can’t get over it but the lettering, holy crap, it’s better than any other book I’m reading right now, and my pull list is insaaaaane, so that’s saying something.

Rating: 10/10

Final Thought:

I don’t know how I could possibly enjoy the next issue more, but it’s gonna happen. This arc borders on fanservice for followers of this title, it’s total gratification for longtime readers seeing all this come together. I can’t wait for next issue.
