War Ensemble (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #35 Comic Review)

When evil looms and monsters lurk in the furthest reaches of space, who do you call? Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps! Tasked with maintaining peace and order throughout the universe by the Guardians of the Universe!

Title: Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #35
Writer: Robert Venditti
Art: Jack Herbert
Publisher: DC Comics

What You Need to Know:

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps has been one of the consistently strongest books in Rebirth, featuring a rock-solid cast of main and supporting characters in the form of a tight-knit cadre of Space Cops! Last couple issues saw The Guardians kidnapped by the Controllers, a child traumatized and the Lantern Honor Guard (Hal, Guy, John, and Kyle) ran out and did some solid police work (seriously, read last issue, it was killer) and managed to find out where the Controllers took the Guardians.

So, if your immortal tiny blue alien figureheads of you intergalactic peacekeeping force are kidnapped, whisked off to a planet jampacked with bad guys and some of the most powerful villains in the galaxy what do you do? Did I mention there’s only four of you? If you and those four are Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps the answer is a full frontal assault!

What You’ll Find Out:

We open on the Honor Guard planning strategy outside the Controllers’ base in Space Sector 3001 within the Maltus Belt. The strategy landed on is the infamous Hal Jordan special, the no plan! Meanwhile, Guy comes up with the greatest of all possible nicknames for the group, and henceforth the 2814 lanterns will only be referred to as the Four Corpsmen!

Meanwhile, the Controllers are continuing to transmogrify the remaining Guardians into Controllers, as both species share a common Maltusian background. Where before there were seven now stand eleven Controllers! Each one powerful to overthrow a galaxy if he should want to! They land on the next Guardian to convert, Ganthet’s wife, blue Sinead O’conner herself, Sayd! (might’ve dated myself a little there)

The Corpsmen begin their assault, they are vastly outnumbered but it hardly slows them down, until the enemy begins employing vibrational blasts, designed to undermine willpower and break concentration! The Lanterns are in for quite a fight!

Catch the fight for yourself, and the ending, which was great, pick up this issue at the local comic book store today!

What Just Happened?

Plot:
It’s been a while since the Lanterns had a large scale all out battle (3-4 issues if I remember right) so this blast was a ton of fun. Just like I loved last issue with its space detective work with Hal, I really love this issue for a depiction of ex-Marine John Stewart in a combat situation, especially since he’s mostly been diverted to desk duty this series. one of the biggest strengths of this series is Robert Venditti’s adept ability to showcase several characters at once without being overwhelming, a rare trait. I did enjoy the idea of the sonic vibrations being able to disrupt the will-powered rings, surprised I haven’t seen more of that. Great issue.

Art:
Another killer entry for Frank Herbert as well, the battle scenes were incredible and I love the way he depicts the Controllers. HIs handle on detail and eyes in particular (a lot of artists slack in the eye department) is awesome to behold.

Rating: 9/10

Final Thought:
I love this series, it has been a solid ride, if you only read one Rebirth series read this one. The world developed is important, but the friendships between the lanterns are amazing.
