REVIEW: Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #40 (Leave No Lantern Behind!)

Zod has captured Hal Jordan on the planet Jekuul, and nothing short of the fury of the entire Green Lantern corps might prevail, but is even that enough to take on 3 full powered Kryptonians?

Title: Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #40 (Zod’s Will pt 4)
Writer: Robert Venditti
Pencils: Rafa Sandoval
Inks: Jordi Tarragona
Colors: Tomeu Morey
Publisher: DC Comics

What You Need to Know:

Following exile from the planet Earth after being released from the Phantom Zone Zod and his family fled the planet, ending up on the planet Jekuul, a planet populated by an alien race that proved simple for the Kryptonians to subjugate. Now their New Krypton has caught the attention of the Green Lantern Corps, and Kyle and Hal were sent to investigate. But, as in all good capture stories, they were unprepared for the intensity of Zod’s assault and were captured. Hal was able to get a critically injured Kyle to safety using his ring, and Kyle was able to warn the Corps. Although the Guardians told John Stewart to wait to deploy the Corps until they could deliberate, Guy and Kyle had other plans. The Corps is mounting a full-scale assault on Jekuul, they have a friend behind enemy lines! Zod is going down!

What You’ll Find Out:

We open on the Guardians predictably chastising John Stewart for allowing the Corps to deploy without their blessing. Seems like their problem, really, the Corps did just fine without them. John tells them they need to accept the situation at hand, the Corps is on Jekuul, they need help.

We cut to the battle on Jekuul, Kyle and Guy are leading the Lanterns in a full frontal assault on the planet, with direct opposition from the 3 Kryptonians. Zod recognizes Kyle and is momentarily surprised since he was on the brink of death previously. The Lanterns start to turn the tide with bravado, showing lots of confidence.

Suddenly the inhabitants of the planet attack, they have been worshiping the Kryptonians as gods, and are wielding spears that can pierce constructs, they are quickly suppressed. But the Kryptonians are unfazed and begin to easily turn the tide of battle, this fight isn’t as easy as it seemed at the start!

What Just Happened?

This issue was action packed and nuts! I’m loving this arc and this issue was what I was hoping for, a full-blown assault, Green Lanterns vs full power Kryptonians, it went exactly like I would’ve wanted! Man, this issue was a ton of fun.

I have been asking all over whether a Green Lantern has overpowered a full power Kryptonian through will alone without the use of outside factors if anyone knows to get back to me using the various links below.

It has been announced and confirmed via Twitter that Robert Venditti is leaving the Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps after issue 50. Venditti will continue writing on Damage and be starting up the new Hawkman ongoing, which I am very excited for. No announcement has been made to his replacement as of yet but I’m sure I’m not alone in hoping to see nothing but the best from all the series involved. DC has been killing it lately, and if anything seems to be stepping up operations this spring!
The art in this issue, courtesy of Rafa Sandoval, is freaking solid at it’s worst and unbelievable at it’s best. This fight was the perfect way to showcase the art teams talent!

Rating: 8.5/10

Final Thought:
Man, I can’t wait for next issue, this arc rules. Fans of the series shouldn’t miss it! Get on this if you aren’t already. Man, I’m gonna miss Venditti.
