Recap

Big ears, even bigger feet, big cartoon peepers. I’d know this dame anywhere. It was me and I was dead and a dang ol’ bunny rabbit! Oh no, not again!!! As if moonlighting as a community college professor wasn’t time-consuming enough, I decided to dip my pinkie toes into the metaphysical private investigation game…all while babysitting a literal princess! Good thing I am not at all stressed out by my life

Review

Harley Quinn #33 is a fever dream of color and story resulting in a chaotic—but enjoyable—read. The latest arc revolving the mystery of who is taking alternate Harleys off the board is an exciting premise and this issue does a good job at setting up Harley-themed detective story.

The issue as a whole has a lot going on. It’s understandable given Harley Quinn is by nature a very chaotic character and while I fully recognize the direction of the story, the plot and pacing become too story focused and leave the character moments of Harley behind. Lux Kirby, the private investigator in the sort definitely steals the show and I hope to see more of the character in future issues.

Written by Tini Howard, this issue is still a good kick off to the private investigator arc for Harley and the overarching story is coming together nicely. The art and colors from Sweeney Boo are top notch and the colors really pop off of the panels and with the multiversal moments, Boo’s art works incredibly well.

This issue has a main story and a back up. If the main story is a fever dream, the backup is the nightmare. Written by Gretchen Felker-Martin with art by Hayden Sherman, the back up story is dark, creepy, and a nice balance to the lighter main story. Harley can fit in a range of stories, and the back up utilizing horror to the anti-heroes roster of tales is a refreshing take.

Final Thoughts

This is a great time to jump onto the Harley Quinn series as there is a nice mix of new story arcs and reference to previous issues. If 33 is any indication of how this latest arc will kick off, there is definitely going to be an exciting experience Harley in a detective role.
