Review

Another week, another issue of Harley Quinn Black + White + Red! In issue #9, Joe Quinones takes Harley on a world trotting adventure in the vein of the great Indiana Jones as we dive into the more troublesome side of her and Pam’s ongoing relationship. This is a classic capes comic that fans of Batman Black and White  as well as the classic Batman Animated Series are sure to have a lot of fun with!

Quinones finds a unique characterization for Harley in this issue and not just as a counterpart to either Poison Ivy or Joker. Yes, a lot of this issue is predicated on the conflicting dynamics between Harley and Poison Ivy but this issue stands out by showing how the two can overcome their problems, together. The inclusion of both Batman and Batgirl is just an added bonus to an already really enjoyable story.

Harley taking on the role of Indiana Jones in her own wacky way is an awesome premise for a comic to once again show just how versatile she is as a character. It’s something I’ve mentioned many times when reviewing this series alone, but it’s arguably nowhere as apparent as in Harley Quinn Black + White + Red #9. With classic superhero antics combined with an adventure searching for what is essentially the fountain of youth, the issue strikes a great balance between familiarity and originality to tell a story that is simply a lot of fun to read.

Quinones captures the unique characterization of Harley in particular with some equally unique visuals. They may not be for everyone, especially with the sometimes chaotic and difficult to follow layout which feels like an attempt to make the most out of a more limited format in the digital comic. Cowles accomplishes what he can in bringing cohesiveness to the story but the structure is a bit too clustered for my own preferences. Aside from these issues and the odd confusion that results from a Batgirl who looks a little bit too much like Batwoman due to the coloring, it’s honestly a really great book to look at with some awesome depictions of both Harley and Pam.

Harley Quinn Black + White + Red #9 is another fun one-shot style issue in a series that really is better than it ever actually had to be. The Indiana Jones influences help the story to stand out and leave a memorable impression even if it isn’t the most consequential story out there. It’s just more proof as to just how successful Harley Quinn can be in such a versatile role. Don’t miss out!
