Hawkman #25: Reunited

Wow!!! It’s been a while since Hawkman has had a “landmark” issue, but 25 issues is definitely a landmark, and the creative team put out an issue that’s going to be remembered as well as other landmark issues have been. Writer Robert Venditti has a ridiculously awesome resume, and this issue’s going to be another addition to it. This issue could have gone a very wrong way, very easily, but thanks to Venditti’s storytelling it takes a really interesting path, not one that you’d expect, but one that you’ll enjoy. There’s a big amount of psychology here, due to what’ going on and he really takes us into the heads of Hawkman and Hawkwoman and lays out for you why they are who they are, even if they do try and fight it sometimes. Venditti conveys real emotion to you, there are parts of the book when I was actually scared for the main characters,  and that hardly ever happens. Needless to say, I really liked this story, I believe you will too, and I’m looking forward to the next twenty-five issues from Venditti.

Artist Marco Castiello is one of the top artists in the industry, and that’s not too big of a surprise considering the work that he puts out. This issue he stretches his awesome ability to new horizons by using a variety of storytelling devices. Double page spreads, “outside the panel” pages, and really interesting uses of light and shadows bring this one to life in a way that makes the Hawks shine. This book is a real treat to look at.
