Review

Hellboy in Love #5 possesses all the characteristics of a good comic book. Its story is compressed yet boundless, the art straddles the line between believable yet imaginatively cartoonish, and it whisks readers away in an immersive tale that’s conveyed in a manner only achievable in this medium. However, it is also intended to serve as the culmination of a mini-series, and as such stumbles at the finale, making it challenging to assess this conclusion. On one hand, it’s an exceptional single-issue comic story, but in fulfilling that role, it struggles to provide a satisfying ending.

The issue follows Hellboy and Anastasia to the ancient burial site in India, where evidence of the Suaren Artea awaits them. Just as the two acquire an ancient skull bearing the proof they seek, an age-old entity intervenes, resulting in widespread chaos.

Hellboy in Love #5 exhibits strong elements in its structure, dialogue, panel-to-panel pacing, and the lucidity of its art. The comic’s narrative flows smoothly, transitioning seamlessly from one scene to another and creating an immersive reading experience. The dialogue is engaging, uncovering deeper layers of the characters’ personalities and propelling the story forward. The panel-to-panel pacing effectively builds tension and keeps readers engrossed, while the clarity of the artwork breathes life into the story and characters.

However, as the concluding issue of a mini-series, thisnisdue falls short in delivering a gratifying ending. The character arcs for Hellboy and Anastasia are not fully explored or resolved, leaving readers desiring more closure. While their admittance of love is strong, the presentation in this showcases it as just another issue in their adventures together. As such, the conclusion feels hurried, lacking the necessary impact and emotional resonance expected from a finale. It leaves loose ends untied and barely scratches the surface of the characters’ development, leaving room for interpretation and leaving readers dissatisfied in terms of their personal journeys.

Despite these shortcomings, this issue remains an enjoyable read. Its tactile structure, compelling dialogue, well-executed panel-to-panel pacing, and clear artwork contribute to its overall appeal. While it may not provide a definitive resolution or fully tie up the loose ends of character arcs, it is engaging and visually captivating.

Final Thoughts

Hellboy in Love #5 sputters to an end with a tight but very anti-climatic conclusion to a series that shows more promise as an ongoing than it does a mini-series. Overall, the series was very strong and this lackluster ending doesn't take away from the near-perfection seen in other issues.
