Recap

The Squadron Supreme of America is the nation's premier (and only) superhero team. But upon closer inspection, it's become obvious they aren't the bunch of boy and girl scouts that the public believes them to be.

Review

This is (I’m assuming) the last of the “solo” issues of this mini-series, that focuses on the Squadron Supreme. This issue spotlights Power Princess (the Wonder Woman of the team) and it’s probably one of the more enjoyable issues of the series. For my money, it’s because author Jason Aaron doesn’t try and make Power Princess’s origin a “Marvel origin”, he just plays it straight and gives her her own deal and the book is much better for it. Also, this issue’s big action is something with immediate consequences, not a story from the character’s past, which was also a nice surprise. It makes the book feel a little more important than any of the past five issues. As with the previous issues, Aaron gives us a few peeks into this universe’s weird history (I almost what a separate mini-series telling the story of these crazy mashed-up events) and people, villains, other heroes, etc.

Add to that is the fact that this issues backup story is my absolute favorite and even though it’s a character that Aaron’s written before this time he writes like everything’s out the window and he’s just throwing everything into the character and his personality. He writes him like he’s portrayed in some of the Marvel films and it’s just as entertaining, if not more. A very well-written pair of stories.

Artist Erica D’Urso is flat-out epic on this issue!!! She’s getting more and more work at the House of Ideas and that’s a good thing for all of us! She treats this issue with a special touch and does the impossible by making a Marvel book look like a DC book set in the Marvel Universe, with a DC fee…..I have no clue what I’m saying, but believe me, this book is excellently drawn.  Ed McGuinness draws the backup story and the weird thing is that while the two stories don’t look the same, they do feel the same, which to me, is the most important thing.

Final Thoughts

The penultimate chapter of this series is the best so far! You get a cool "one and done" story and you also get the build-up to next issue's finale!!
