Hex Wives, #1
Salem, MA 1662, having your eyes wide open while under water is hard to do but not if you panic and drowning. Nadiya was doing just that, she was drowning until Isadora her lover came to the rescue.

We are taken to Pawling NY in 1777. Isadora and Nadiya in a barn. Similar to the year 1662, men outside of the barn are looking to slay the witches inside. However, Nadiya has different ideas about the situation as she slaughters an animal for its blood to help her become powerful. Much like the events in 1662, the two women slaughtered the men. After the massacre, the women ride off on the men's horses.
South Pass City, Wy in 1873 not unlike the events in 1662 or 1777, men wanting the blood of the witches and they have different ideas about it. This continues throughout time.
Arron talks to a group of men, about vengeance on the witches. He believes he has a way to finally take the witches out, by a willing kiss. He states they have a hidden nuclear bomb. As he opens the door and shows a shadowy figure sitting in a rocking chair.

The women gather in the yard, gossiping drinking their morning coffee. Carrying out their day. As they go outside of a smoke, Rebeckah attempts to use the lighter when her firepower kicks in. Shocked and unsure what occurred. Nadiya begins to pick up the mess for them ladies. As her husband calls asking if she could have a cool martini waiting for him when he gets home, Nadiya agrees.
As she continues to clean, cook dinner, fix hair and makeup, she hears her husband come home. She rushes to open the door, as she opens the door readers find out that her husband is non-other than Aaron.
When I was first asked to review this title, I will admit I was not looking forward to it (also I was not-not looking forward to it either). Supernatural witches not really my thing (most of the time). However, I accepted and knew I would go on with a blank mind. I find it important to go in with a blank mind to allow the book to paint a picture of the story.
I am glad that I did have the chance to read this book. It is fun, beautifully colored and controversial. I did read different comments about the book after I read it. I can see how this could be a political book. It shows women with great power and turned into Stepford housewives, taking away of their power, their strength, their independence and turned two of them into heterosexual women. Do I know if the writers intend it to be a political statement? Maybe, but I don’t want it to overshadow the book. It’s a fun book to read.
Although I admitted my eagerness to pick up Hex Wives was limited, After reading the book I changed my tone. I am excited about the next issue! I am hoping that the witches get sweet revenge on the so-called boys club in the book!
Yes, you should read this book! The violence can be a bit gruesome (which is awesome). I did score the writing and story at 9. I am really interested in seeing where this goes. I liked the writing style as it gave us an origin story but did not take forever to bring us to the present. It presented the idea of this is what is happening, how we got here, without taking us on a long drive so to speak. The story is good, it made me want more.
I did give the art an 8. Now to be fair I am an art snob, I love all forms of art. I think the art is great, what I didn't like about it was some of the facial expressions the lines in the face where drawn a little harsher then I like it but seriously that is me nitpicking. I love love the use of colors. It was bright and beautiful.
