Review

Hexagon Bridge #1 is one of the most imaginative series premieres as of late. It’s beautifully drawn, each word is treated with purpose, and the created world is haunting and beautifully designed.

This issue introduces readers to the Armlen family and the parallel dimension that has split them up. Elena and Jacob (Mother and Father) are two explorers working to map the new realm when they get separated. Their daughter Adley, who is clairvoyant, has been trying to find her parents in the other world and may know how to save them.

It’s a somewhat ambitious idea. However, it is all put together in an intriguing and reader-friendly way. Richard Blake, a relatively new creator of the medium, is the writer and artist of this mini-series, and this issue is a fantastic introduction.

The writing is sharp, with no overinflated exposition. Readers are given enough to put the pieces together while building curiosity to want to learn more.

Writing and creating art by one person is a gamble when it comes to comics, and sometimes, one aspect may falter as only so much time can be committed to both. In this case, the art is just as great as the writing, and Blake’s vision is undoubtedly something to be in awe of.

The art is stellar, with clean line work and whimsical colors. Blake has a natural knack for focused information in his writing, and the art is similar in this style. Panels are minimal when necessary, and others have careful details that draw readers into the experience. But it isn’t just about the skill; the creativity in the world being fleshed out feels like a world that has been living and breathing for some time.

This story has so much mystery to it, and I appreciate how many themes are already revealed in just the first part of this story. There are a lot of great comics on the shelves. However, this is genuinely a standout issue.

With no flaws, one can’t help but be utterly excited about where this story will go. There is an energy to this comic that draws readers in quickly, and while one can expect the journey to be an emotional rollercoaster, one can’t wait to read the next issue.

Final Thoughts

Hexagon Bridge #1 is completely worth checking out and it’s evident this is going to be a special miniseries from Image Comics. This may be Blake’s first comic series, but I suspect it certainly isn’t his last.
