Recap

As a group of octogenarian ex-celebrities try to shepherd a baby kaiju to safety, they’re found by military agents who try to capture it — with devastating results! As the Hollywood has-beens are caught in the crossfire, they have to ask themselves, just what are they willing to sacrifice to save an alien creature?

Review

Now that “Jones’” intentions are clear, Loretta and the others have to find a way to get the wayward kaiju back home to the bottom of the ocean where he belongs. However, that proves easier said than done when the government comes knocking.

It’s not every day that a coming of age tale is told from the perspective of people who are already well past the age. Nonetheless that’s the predicament that our intrepid group of elderly folks find themselves in with “Jones”. Having telepathically seen a future where a government controlled Jones lays waste to society, our curmudgeons have no choice but to go on a journey to take the kaiju home.

Rob Williams’ script is loaded with crude humor, but also a dash of heart and melancholy. Loretta (the de-facto leader of the group) gets more spotlight as her backstory is revealed, as well as her two week marriage to Brock once upon a time. Jones’ journey to Hidden Springs is also revealed and we get our first look at our military antagonists. The rest of the crew have yet to establish themselves, but there are glimpses of them starting to be more defined.

Nil Vendrell’s art is fun and expressive, with Berta Sastre’s colors adding more depth to the visuals. Jones’ bio-electric powers are displayed with an explosion of yellows and oranges that pop off of the page.

Final Thoughts

Hidden Springs #2 keeps up the entertaining tone from the first issue and also starts to add a bit more depth to our cast of aging characters.
