Recap

With a name like Hoody: Sympathetic Murder you would expect some sympathy, but not from this little sociopath. This little guy has murder on his mind. Hoody is the type of murder that will kill you just for looking at him wrong. We are taken on a wild ride from roaming the streets while Hoody goes on a killing spree to a bad ice cream man to a wild ride on a rocket. In the first four chapters, you find there is more then meets the eye with this little murder.

Review

At Comic Watch, a reviewer generally has their list of comics they are responsible for, but occasionally we see a new comic up for grabs. This is how I ended up with Hoody. The first thing I saw was the cover, I grabbed it right away. You know it’s going to be a bloodfest adventure with twists and turns just by the cover.

The cover does not disappoint to the story. The story is weird in all the right ways. You have no idea what is coming next. Johnson did a really good job at keeping you on your toes. It is hard in this day and age to not know the general idea of where a story is going. That is exactly what you have here. I thought I knew where the story was going but took sharp turns in a whole other direction.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Hoody and Sal. Hoody kills anyone for any reason, as Sal is fine watching the bodies pile up but tries to be the good influence on Hoody.

The art is unique in that it’s not typical comic book art. That may sound like a negative, but it’s not. It is different which brings a “cool” element to the book. The art compliments the writing extremely well. Hewitt on art and colors by Suryadi complement each other very well. It’s a mixture of dark and bloody but keeping it light at the same time. The art is consistent throughout the book.

I sat on this book a few days before writing the review. I wasn’t sure what I thought of it. Which speaks volumes to Johnson’s writing. He left me thinking about it days after reading the book. What made me really appreciate the story was the art. The creative team has solid ideas and they are not afraid to take a risk.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, Hoody is like no other book on the market. It is blood-filled fun with twists and turns of an adventure that you have no idea where it will end.
