Review
House of Slaughter is back and better than ever as it’s time to go to war in issue #21. This issue focuses on building tension and political drama between monster hunting houses and makes for an exciting read.
Fans of the series will remember excommunicated House of Slaughter member Jace Boucher is on the run. Having spent his time hunting monsters on his own, he now acts as the guardian to dozens of children he has saved who have nowhere to go. Considered a liability, he has quickly moved up the list of targets to eliminate.
The universe of Something is Killing the Children, or “Slaughterverse,” has grown exponentially and while Erica Slaughter is the key character, Jace has quickly become a fan favorite. He’s suffered many losses to get to where he is, but despite losing a hand, the love of his life, and even his family, he is still a very capable fighter.
Writer Tate Brombal leans into Jace’s abilities and this issue reminds readers how much of a badass the character is. This series is often used to expand the lore of the Slaughterverse, but it has still kept its own style and intrigue and this issue definitely builds a lot of excitement about what is to come. The script is fast-paced and hooks readers right from the beginning. Despite being a dialogue heavy entry, there’s plenty to get readers excited about.
The art from Antonio Fuso and colors by Miquel Muerto work phenomenally. From limo caravans and secret meeting rooms to giant monsters in a swamp, the visuals are nothing short of awesome. Fuso’s character designs keep that “rough” style and Muerto’s colors work well for this horror series.
Final Thoughts
If ever there was a time to jump onto House of Slaughter and the rest of the Slaughterverse, this is it!
