ICYMI: Catwoman #52 Penance and Vengeance

In issue 52, we see Selina in jail, making friends while she fights the urge to pay her penance. However, she can still operate and work outside. On the outside, Seina still has friends fighting for her to make sure she can get out and have something for her when she is no longer in prison. Selina has few friends who do anything for her. Eiko Hasegawa is a progeny of Catwoman and would do anything for her. Even parade around as Catwoman to get Selina out of jail. If Catwoman is still on the loose, the cops got it wrong and have to release Selina, right?! But can Eiko keep up the charade and go to The Gentleman Club as a member of the Hasigawa clan and not be discovered as the cat? That list includes The Bat, but that’s to be expected when they in trouble; they are always there for each other.

A fun and exciting issue that continues the story in a way I wasn’t sure I wanted it to go until you get to the end, and you’re like, “Yeah, that’s Selina Kyle, That’s Catwoman!”
The series has had Catwoman do a lot of reflection, and I was not sure how I would enjoy the prison aspect of this story, but Tini Howard has done well with the idea. Cunning, intelligent, and wise, Selina Kyle brings audiences into the criminal world seamlessly. And, as always, what is any comic without its artists?

Artist Sami Basri brings settings into a new light giving the story a delicate balance of depth. Darkness and humor are displayed throughout Selina Kyle’s prison experience and absence on the streets of Gotham. I enjoy a DC book that isn’t grim in its art all the time too many shadows. It’s like reading black panels. Sami Basri and Veronica Vandini did an excellent job on the artwork in this book. As a Catwoman team, overall, this was a good read.
