CREEPSHOW #1
Recap
The Cryptkeeper invades Skybound to bring his terrifying tales to the masses!
Review
The Cryptkeeper is back, and his tales are just as fun, campy, and gory as they should be. The amount of fun that these two different creative teams have had with this book comes through like an axe to the forehead. In pure Creepshow fashion, the book delves out the right amount of brutality that leaves the reader intrigued and wanting more. The first story, “Take One,” takes place on Halloween and deals with three gluttonous teenagers looking to wreak havoc on unsuspecting neighborhoods, no judgement being passed as we all have launched a few eggs at one point or another. However, when you go messing with the dead, that’s a whole different ball of wax. Chris Burnam (writer, artist), Adriano Lucas (colors), and Pat Brosseau (letters) do a phenomenal job at bringing Creepshow to life with “Take One,” you feel like a kid again with the blanket ready to pull over your eyes. You can hear the flesh tear over the kids’ screams. You feel their fear. The Cryptkeeper wouldn’t have it any other way.
Next up is “Shingo.” Paul Dini and Stephen Langford (writers), John McCrea (artist), Mike Spicer (colors), and Pat Brosseau (letters) take this story in a direction that I wasn’t expecting. Campy horror goodness, that is something right out of the 1980s. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Killer Klowns from Outerspace, and now we can add Shingo to that list. Think of a psychotic Furby with arms and a penchant for eating people! What’s not to love? I had a great laugh when the parents were arguing while Shingo was running roughshod over the party. Brosseau’s work throughout the book is the general on the battlefield setting the pace. From being able to hear the screams or hearing Shingo sing his birthday anthem, he steals the show from Cryptkeeper.
Final Thoughts
Creepshow and the Cryptkeeper are icons of the genre, and this first installment is absolutely enjoyable and so much fun. It pays great service to fans old and new and is a great stepping stone to those that may have never heard the Cryptkeeper’s tales before.
