Review

Nightwing #108 is a mixed issue that readers will likely be frustrated by.

This recent arc involves Nightwing joining forces with an old flame who runs a pirate crew. While on the waters they face double crosses and secret locations—you know, pirate stuff. But I can’t help but feel let down by this issue as it focuses on shock and plot versus character development and world building.

Nightwing is a flexible character and he fits in well with a range of locations. Having him serve as a pirate is a fun idea, but I wish more time was spent on this unexplored part of the DC Universe. This issue has the crew on a secret pirate location and it doesn’t feel like the location matters. It’s more of a vehicle to the surprise ending and it makes for a rushed story.

Maybe writer Tom Taylor didn’t get enough issue count but I wish there was more time to expand on DC pirate lore.

The art continues to be fantastic from Stephen Byrne (artist) and Adriano Lucas (colorist). It’s solid and balances the story and is consistent with previous issues. The story doesn’t give the artists much ability to flex their skills though so panels are not always super exciting.

On the back up story is a small scale Nightwing tale that has Nightwing confronting the man in the suit from previous stories. It’s entertaining and I appreciate the low stakes wholesome story from Michael W. Conrad with art by Serg Acuna and Adriano Lucas.

Final Thoughts

Nightwing fans are likely to feel the pirate arc is overstaying its welcome—which is a bummer because there’s so much that could be done. Hopefully next issue picks up better.
