HOW MANY MILES DOES IT TAKE…TO SAVE THE UNIVERSE?! The smash hit of 2022 rolls on with its best issue yet. Nightcrawler visits Book Law, but what does HE need legal defense for? And one of the greatest traditions in Marvel Comics history continues here!
It’s issue number SIX of Rainbow Rowell’s She-Hulk, and we’re starting to settle into the style of this ongoing series. It’s a breezy slice of life comedy about Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk. While I would love to see more action incorporated into the series, I’m enjoying seeing a day-in-the-life of our favorite jade giantess.
Rowell continues to set up She-Hulk’s supporting cast with Mallory Book, Awesome Andy, and Hellcat, while adding in a storyline with Nightcrawler that has some great potential to bring some buzz to the series. I appreciate the use of She-Hulk’s core supporting cast as in the past few She-Hulk ongoings, we have seen the creative teams completely ditch them in favor of brand new characters.
There’s some back-and-forth about She-Hulk’s nemesis in the comics that left me a bit perplexed. Jen may be chummy with Titania at the moment, but I’ve always seen her as the She-Hulk archenemy. Maybe they can be archfrenemies? Either way, Mallory Book is kidding herself if she thinks she has that role. But Rowell also perfectly captures Book’s voice as she flip-flops over her stance on representing superhumans in the courtroom.
We do get some progress with Jack of Hearts which I appreciate, as the last few issues felt like that story arc was going in circles. I’m definitely a fan of the romance aspect of this run so far. The art is flirty and fun, like She-Hulk herself, and there’s a feminine angle to Luca Maresca’s pencils that I adore. There aren’t many flirty and fun comics on the stand these days, so it’s amazing that Marvel is confidently publishing this title. With the Krakoan story set up here, I have a feeling we’re going to get more eyes on She-Hulk in the near future.
After six issues, I can safely say She-Hulk is an enjoyable romantic comedy that goes perfectly hand-in-hand with the new television series, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. I would like to see a bit more superhero action in future issues, but until then I'll continue enjoying Jen living her best life.
