Review

Beast World is an interesting event in comics, especially since early on, the reader has been introduced to a variety of characters that have gotten brief introductions, like Dr. Hate. Hopefully the suspense and mystery behind the character builds up after this shocker of an issue where the fate of one of the Titans is being juggled, left in the air by the hands of the writers and editors.

The story starts off in the middle of an abduction being carried out by Peacemaker. He goes head to head with Chester Runk, who tries to swallow Peacemaker into a black hole. Peacemaker quickly flips the script and has him on his back in no time, looking forward to Waller’s plans with the mysterious character.

Meanwhile in Ivy Town, Giganta tries to protect civilians from the beasts only to end up turning into a raging grizzly bear who is enormous, to say the least. A variety of heroes, summoned by Barbara Gordon, intervene to stop Giganta, such as Swamp Thing, Cyborg, and Superman. The three heroes work well enough together to stop the threat in ways that are amusing to look at, where the art and colors really pop out showing the creative team’s talent.

After Giganta’s defeat, the Titans are gathered again in their tower where they are watching a news broadcast in which the reporter informs that the worldwide attack is the fault of a superhero went rogue, and that the Titans have the power to stop the beast but one of them has been sleeping with the monster. Furthermore, he goes so far as to accuse Beast Boy of mass murder on a global scale. This dialogue helps preps for the aftermath of the Beast World event where the Titans are going to be facing off against a “fake news” kind of arc.

It is then revealed that Amanda Waller uses Chester Runk’s black hole abilities to swallow up Garro, in theory killing the hero.

This issue of Beast World was something in the sense of Beast Boy’s fate. Surely enough, nobody is really dead in comics, especially with characters that can go back in time and rescue them. However, Amanda Waller has proven to be one hell of a villain, utilizing Dr. Hate, Chester Runk, and Peacemaker all together, even turning the public against the Titans, a superhero team meant to protect the world.

Final Thoughts

The issue keeps up the beat of the previous books and adds more and more to the story, feeling like a major midpoint in the event. It continues the solution, problem, solution dynamic and the writing is phenomenal enough to keep readers hooked.
