If You Find This, I’m Already Dead #1
Recap
Robin is a big city reporter, embedded with US Marines heading to the hostile pocket universe called Terminus. Ten minutes in, the entire marine squad is wiped out and she has to survive (and report) on her own. Terminus is full of cosmic wonders–and sci-fi “gods” that are in the middle of a political power struggle. The language is alien, and the politics are deadly. Can she survive long enough to figure out what’s going on and get home to tell the story?
Review
If You Find This, I’m Already Dead #1 is a tense sci-fi thriller that will leave readers out of breath by the end of the issue.
There is no sugar coating it, this issue is brutal and certainly not for the faint of heart. A premiere issue, the story kicks off with humanity finding access to another realm. For now, answering how a quantum realm has been found isn’t important so much as the “what comes next.”
For reporter Robin Reed, she is the first press/civilian to enter the realm with a group of elite soldiers. Within the first few pages, the group are attacked by hostile aliens turning an envoy into a fight to survive.
Writer Matt Kindt (whose work was also on BRZKR, another bloody title) is no stranger to making the violence part of the plot. This is visualized by Dan McDaid (art) and Bill Crabtree (colors) in very graphic ways. Blood and limbs might as well be side characters.
From a story perspective there is not a lot of character development as the action begins almost immediately. However, the range of aliens that are present in the issue do a decent amount of world building and establishing a political system that is heavily fascist.
With an entertaining and fast paced story and rough but action filled art, this issue will definitely stand apart from other comics on the stands right now.
Final Thoughts
Comic readers looking for an explosive sci-fi story are in for a treat with this issue. The entire creative team has put together a raw story but one that isn’t shy from showing the violence that press often covers.
