Immortal Thor #3: Riddle Me This, Odinson!

It is a truth universally acknowledged since the Poetic Eddas that trusting Loki is generally a very bad idea. Nonetheless, when Loki posed Thor a troubling question at the end of Immortal Thor #2 – “Will you trust me even as your enemy?” – Thor, being Thor, answered yes. Picking up where the previous issue left off, this newest issue sees Loki whisk Thor off to an alien planet and set him a riddle so cryptic it would make Riddler jealous (all while wearing a costume that screams magician-meets-vampire-meets-Elton-John). 

Thor is sometimes written as all brawn and no brains, so it’s always nice to see him put up against a problem that violence can’t solve. And following the previous run that saw Loki doing precious little, it’s refreshing to see Loki making mischief again. Hopefully for the right reasons this time. Although Immortal Thor #3 is low on action, it provides readers with a satisfying exploration of Thor and Loki’s evolving relationship. 

Artist Martín Cóccolo and colorist Matt Wilson continue to be a perfect match for Ewing’s writing and for one another. Even the comic’s conversational scenes feel visually interesting and avoid “talking heads” territory. Where their work together truly shines, however, is in Thor’s interactions with the surreal alien landscape and similarly surreal spells Loki pulls out of their magical pockets. And once again, the comic’s final pages leave plenty for readers to puzzle over and be excited for until next month.
