Incoming! #1: Something Wicked This Way Comes

Incoming! is a collaborative narrative that involves a multitude of writers and artists. The story flows from segment to segment seamlessly, allowing for a cohesive story. Each writer fits the current state of their characters while dropping hints of what’s to come in just a few pages before passing the story to the next creative team. While some of these segments seem to stray from the narrative of Incoming, the finesse of the whole product makes it easy to forgive.

With so many artists on the book and each only having a few pages to work with, it really brings to light the varying styles of the titles for 2020. It some cases, the transition serves to highlight both the style and talent of the artists.

The vehicle for this sampling seems slightly weak, though. With the number of murders and mysteries present in the marvel universe, it seems odd that this single man’s death connects so many people. Especially since most books only operate under the assumption that the hero faces all but the direst threat solo. The story itself, beyond leading into the upcoming Empyre event, seems to be secondary to the smorgasbord of talent.

The focus of Incoming on teasing 2020 is made even more apparent with some of the more awkward transitions from one segment to the next. Someone says Las Vegas so the story shows us Ghost Rider in Vegas. Ghost Rider mentions hell and it takes us to… Knull in space. Again, the overall melding makes up for these weaker moments, and with all of those segments grouped in the middle, it is easy to dismiss.
