INFINITY COUNTDOWN: CAPTAIN MARVEL #1

What You Need to Know:

During Infinity Countdown: Prime #1 issue, Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers has possession of the Reality Stone, but the narrator informs the reader that versions of Captain Marvel across the multiverse each have their very own Reality Stones as well. We’re shown Monica Rambeau as well as the original, the Kree warrior named Mar-Vell. Note: these two characters are scheduled to appear in the upcoming Captain Marvel movie.

What You’ll Find Out:

Tapping into each of these realities has cost Carol as she finds herself lost in them. The first alternate reality, a divergent Civil War II, Captain Marvel nearly sacrificed herself instead of accidentally putting Tony Stark in a coma.

Carol then visits an alternate reality, Earth 10774. Where Monica Rambeau never stopped being Captain Marvel and created a Captain Marvel Corps through copies of herself to fight crime. Carol learned that her counterpart in this reality subdued to a homeless drunk.

The confused and outraged Carol was taken by the reality stone to Earth 9289, where a version of Rogue who became Binary instead. Through reliving regretful inner demons, Carol was taken forth yet another Earth, where she has cancer. Mar-Vel is still around due to Carol’s fight with Nitro. Through all alternate realities of the Multiverse, Carol comes to a conclusion. Her decisions make her own reality and in that reality, she is CAPTAIN MARVEL!

What Just Happened?

Carol Danvers uses the power of the Reality Stone to seek answers and build self-confidence to beat the villain Blastaar. Between McCann’s writing and Olortegue’s artwork, the story has a good flow and tells the intended story well. I can see this issue alienating fans who are excited for the Captain Marvel movie, or even die-hard Carol readers. However, it would have been much more impressive if this was an actual tie-in event, with a story including Ultron and the Soul Stone, or maybe Super-Skrull with the Time Stone. Personally, I would rather see a three-part tie-in event where a more in-depth story of both Monica and Mar-Vel through utilization of the Reality, Time, and Space Stones by their beholders. It would be outstanding if McCann utilized some basic concepts on quantum physics.

Rating: 7/10

Final Thought: Huge fans of Carol Danvers may appreciate this solo issue. Carol learned some important lessons but in her current rank…these lessons should have already have been learned. This issue is not much of an Infinity Countdown tie-in, where it only slightly related to Infinity Countdown Prime. Deceptively dense, Infinity Countdown: Captain Marvel #1 is a diverting, inessential, and only a stand-alone featuring Marvel’s next onscreen big star.
