Recap
Iron Man and his small band of allies go interstellar as they pursue Korvac to the farthest reaches of the galaxy, even as the villainous android intellect tries to telepathically lure Hellcat and Tony toward his bizarre utopian visions. But after an unexpected left turn leaves Iron Man on a remote and uncharted planet, Korvac might take the opportunity to blow Shellhead’s vulnerable friends out of the stars once and for all.
Review
Accompanied by their allies, Iron Man and Hellcat are in space and on their way to kick the living hell out of Korvac. The issue opens up with Tony and Rhodey having a serious talk about whether Tony has a great approach to how to defeat him. I like that even though Tony’s plan seems to have a very slim chance of working, Rhodey still trusts in him. During this scene we also see the two giving their suits a tune-up. I love that exchange of them tuning their suits while continuing to show trust in each other through dialogue.
Through the lens of Misty Knight, Cantwell brings up a fun discussion between Frog Man, Gargoyle, Ben Reilly, and her about what exactly defines a god. Through each of their perspectives they clarify why certain powerful cosmic characters wouldn’t be considered one. It’s a clever and fun interaction between this still unexpected group dynamic.
Tony suggests to Patsy to try to turn the tables onto Korvac by delivering a message to him in their psionic link. With Patsy being able to pull this off, we get to see her stepping into the role of control of this tricky situation. She is able to open the doors of communication and bring a direct conversation where the three can freely talk.
The way CAFU creates the art for this series is beyond beautiful. CAFU creates panels that look as if they could be a shot for a blockbuster movie. It’s incredible how Hellcat can have so many different facial expressions while wearing a mask. You can feel her pain while half of her face is hidden. D’Armata adds great color in addition to CAFU’s art. The incredible techniques of coloring really show during the telepathic conversation when Patsy, Tony, and Korvac stand on a planet. The subtle colors make it a magnificent scene.
Final Thoughts
Cantwell creates scenes that explore the vulnerability of Tony and Patsy in this series. While this issue focuses more on their telepathic confrontation with Korvac, we still see glimpses of that through interactions. This issue begins to show Hellcat that she can work to get the upper edge on Korvac through Tony’s support even if he keeps blocking their attempts for the time being. This creative team flourishes in storytelling and beautiful art.
