James Bond #2: A Woman to Spy For

This comic is weird. But it’s a good weird, not a bad weird at all. As I was reading this, I was thinking “I really shouldn’t be liking this book, but I am really enjoying it!”. I’m pretty sure you will too.

Authors Vita Ayala & Danny Lore give us the next chapter in this Bond adventure. This book is 90% talking, with very little action. In fact, I don’t even think anyone fires a gun or even runs in this issue, let alone do any of the trademark Bond action moves. Well, they do play cards, so that might count. Again, my point is, that this book is ALL talk and NO action. So then, why did I absolutely love it? Because it reads exactly like a Bond movie. It’s that part in every Bond movie that comes about 2/3 of the way through that’s essentially an info dump about the Bond Girl and other supporting characters by sitting and talking on a long train, plane or automobile ride. Needless to say, this issue is packed with backstory on the characters, and Ayala & Lore do an amazing job setting up the next issue. I was most impressed that there’s actual spying in the book. An amazing job telling the story this issue!!

Artist Eric Gapstur does it again!!! He turns in a great issue that represents not only the world of Bond but also the feel of the Bond world. Gapstur does an amazing job of making this issue look timeless. The technology in this issue could honestly be something from today or from the 1960s. Those kinds of designs are hard to pull off. He’s also one of the few artists that I’ve seen use blank backgrounds to successfully convey drama. Ayala & Lore put up the alley-oop and Gapstur hits the slam-dunk!!!
