Review

This issue provides a wholesome and touching story about generosity. When the Storyteller’s dog doesn’t want to give up his stick for the fire the storyteller is reminded of a story which shows that a little generosity can go a long way.

Focusing on the selkies (shapeshifting mermaids of Scottish folklore); this issue tells the tale of Willa Westness, who’s kindness towards a baby seal and its mother is rewarded 7 years later in the form of a vaguely familiar human mother and daughter showing up exactly in Willa’s time of need. It is presented as a sweet story of innocence and altruism in a heartfelt and beautiful way.

While the art has a strange contrast between simplistic human faces, detailed backgrounds, and near lifelike depictions of seals, it works well with the content and tone of the story. Tho simply drawn, the faces are very expressive and to well to convey the feelings of the characters. Along with a great drab and pastel color palette, the art does well to capture the warm and wholesome feel of the story.

Another great addition to this series filled with wholesome events and images as well as interesting folklore. This may be the best issue of the series so far.

Final Thoughts

A wholesome story of generosity and Scottish selkies, depicted with soft and fitting art.
