John Constantine: Hellblazer #5: Raunchy as Ever

Any comic that has “Satan’s gangrenous taint” on the first page is a comic worth reading. It is little moments like these that show that Spurrier was born to write Constantine. Spurrier’s writing is so British and so raunchy, which pretty much describes Constantine. Spurrier, Bergara, and Bellaire are such a delightful and talented team, that they even make a giant fecal matter monster entertaining. Every inch of this issue is breathtaking. Bergara is extremely talented and is an artist I would not have imagined doing a Constantine book. That makes this arc so much better than I anticipated. Spurrier and company continue to put out a Constantine book that feels like it could exist in this very moment.

John Constantine is hungry for friends, but he never wants to show it. By the end of this issue, he is in the park with Tommy. It is no surprise that Constantine was not a fan of Tommy at the start. In fact, Tommy might be a representation of everything Constantine hates about the modern world he has been thrown back in. Constantine decides to help Tommy after realizing either Tommy can succeed without him or that he can’t. What is worse for Constantine? He either doesn’t want Tommy to get all of the glory, or he doesn’t want the kid to die. I am hoping it is the latter, especially with my theory that Constantine wants friends.
