Recap

Janna and the Unpossible Monsters is a brand-new series from acclaimed comics writer and artist Chris Samnee and wife Laura Samnee.

Review

Chris Samnee is of course a huge selling point for comics fans and this joint effort with wife Laura does not fall short of the hype.

The first half of the book features little to no dialogue but manages to set the scene, explain the world in which our protagonist lives and gives us the personalities of Jonna and Rainbow so clearly that you feel the entire comic could be told without the need for dialogue at all.

When we finally meet one of the “Unpossible Monsters,” the sheer size of the creature and it’s unique design give off a child-friendly Shadow of the Colossus feel which moves beyond it’s targeted young audience and appeals easily to, well, all of us who are kids at heart.

Matt Wilson’s colors are also to thank for the mouth-watering, bombastic art. Wilson, arguably one of the best colorists in comics, makes every panel explode from the page while adding to the book’s overall cartoony feel.

The story is nicely paced and sets up enough mystery to keep you eager for the follow-up issue. What are the monsters? What happened to Jonna? Unpossible Monsters manages intrigue without giving us too little or too much information.

Crank!’s letters are bold and fitting with both artist and colorist’s styles, making the story easy to read for all ages.

Final Thoughts

Over all, Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters is a breath of fresh air to Oni's catalogue. The team are on to a winner here and this is bound for the Eisners.
