Review

We now start a new chapter in the Justice League book with writer Simon Spurrier for his turn on the famous team. The first issue is very straight forward and easy to follow as we get introduced to a new race and planet to give us a fresh Sci-Fi feel story.

Seeing as this will be a 3-part arc Spurrier does not waste time jumping us straight in to the heart of this story and rightfully so as it give the reader a nice pace to start and has every page of the read feel necessary. With this as I said we get a very uncomplicated flow – the League finds the abandoned ship of children seemingly trapped by a monstrous alien entity in a non-lethal method – they figure out these young-lings were cast out by their own corrupt divided mind controlled race, thus the league will bring them home. It was at this point of the issue it gets a mediocrity feel but that thankfully changes in the latter half.

Upon arriving, we get the recurring sequence between the team debating what action they should take upon this chaotic race, Superman, as always, yearns to take action quick on what he believes is right whilst Wonder Woman urges for them not to intervene with little to no knowledge. Now I know this is a common occurrence in this series, but I feel it will have a much bigger play across this arc.

We end the book discovering that this new race has heavily sided with wanting the League to rule over them as they find themselves in an unusual state with no leader before a new foe waves its head (which as of now can only be described as a Krang-like villain) takes the team by surprise to leave us on that cliffhanger until the next issue.

Final Thoughts

I hope fans can overlook the continuing out of sync mini-series happening with the book and get invested in the stories for what they are – which is how I am approaching them. I am intrigued by the situation the League are in which as far as I can recall has not happened before therefore fueling interest to see how it unfolds. The artwork from the team is impressive and engrossing new character designs (excluding those children).

Overall an impressive set-up issue for a new Justice league Sci-Fi venture.
