Recap

In the finale of "The Rule of War" arc we witness twists and turns as the Empress Siddinix’s evil plan comes to light against the Justice League who are fending off the continued attacks of the Vermidiim race whilst trying to save Trotha and its people who now fear them!

Review

Si Spurrier’s short sci-fi inspired Justice League arc enticed readers in with an intriguing beginning and most definitely fits the landing for a good ending in this extra-sized anniversary issue!

As expected, Spurrier smartly built up this story with a lot enigma surrounding these newly introduced races to have it all revealed alongside the twists and turns that come with it in this final installment, skillfully done as it had me engaged from beginning to end in a story arc that could have very easily been forgettable. I think that statement alone speaks volumes.

Ahead of me getting more into the review of the story twists and writing, credit has to be given to the art team of Aaron Lopresti, Matt Ryan and David Baron as not only has their work been stellar through the arc but I think shines most in this concluding issue, especially in the two grand battle scenes!

The big twists moments in this issue is what makes it memorable most, firstly while the League seem to fail time and time again with Trotha and its race, Bruce calls a meeting and rightfully blasts that they’re screwing it up and proposes they inject a bit of tough love into the race by having them trained while using Siddinix’s war fleet and mind control to have them fight for themselves as he feels they are now wasting their time on this planet in which Flash befittingly responds that he seems darker than usual with this statement.

Diana is taking the non-violence route to try and strategically end the attacks of the Vermidiim she discovers Siddinix sent two individuals of the Trotha race each from different factions with gifts that have a devastating mix leading to a delayed first blow on the Vermidiim race. Now knowing that Siddinix seemed this war all along. Upon this revelation comes our first big twist as Bruce then strikes Diana down and it is revealed he is being mind-controlled by Siddinix all along, explaining his previous actions.

Adding to this we learn of the final twists being Siddinix planned all of this from the beginning to regain the submission of her race through fear, she even planted the crying ‘lost children’ distress call from the beginning of this arc and successfully achieving what she set out to do as the race now begs for her reinstatement and ruler.

However the them throughout the book of Diana trying to discover more about Trotha instead of ruling finally rears its head in a classic final twist as she has outsmarted Sididinix having figured out her plan all along all along having regained Bruce on her side and eventually the entire league late on having Siddinix reveal all her mischievous plan and evil nature to all of her race trough broadcast. We see our fitting happy ending moments with an encouraging quote to finish the book and tale off on a high!

Final Thoughts

The writing for this finale is done expertly by Spurrier, even if the twists are familiar. It gives the reader a great, easy-to-follow and inspiring ending to this arc that demands to be admired. Whilst it was short, I found the arc a diverting, memorable read.
