Recap

In the Blood Reef, Aquaman is held prisoner by the Ocean Lords, A’s Fleet Admiral Tydde orders Commander Drogue and Captain Gall on the train invasion of Earth, for revenge against Poseidon for imprisoning her and letting her planets oceans drain.

In Gotham, Batman aids Jim Gordon in the evacuation of the civilians by having League members fly them from the rooftops. As Gordon plans to stay until the last man is safe, he is tackled by an infected into the waters where he transforms. He attacks Batman, who is revealed to be a hologram as he sits broken in the Hall of Justice. He has asked M’gann to help him in the Hall to keep track of the heroes. He connects to Superman who tells him Metropolis is safe due to STAR labs sea walls, but the outer boroughs have been affected. Flash is running around the world aiding heroes in Beijing, Japan and London.

Aquaman speaks with Tydde, who tells him that she has struck a deal to take Earth with Black Manta. The two fight until Tydde intervenes, draining Aquaman of his oceanic abilities. As Black Manta wields his new powers the two go to Earth.

On Earth, Metropolis is flooded and Superman races off to find the Flood Beast. As he prepares to beat it, he is attacked by Drogue and is beaten. He is about to be turned into a mutant but the Flash saves him and the two race away to higher ground.

Meanwhile, Mera is led by Orm to Arions Crown which hold the Tear of Extinction that will lead them to the weapon that Poseidon used against the Ocean Lords before. When they leave they are ambushed by Gall and his mutants who push Orm out of Meras shield where he turns into one of them. As Gall prepares his army Mera manages to escape

Review

This issue built on everything that Justice League and Aquaman prepared. The tie-in written by Tynion IV was awesome. It had heart and had some amazing panels. The Aquaman portion of the story built upon the story of Arion and Poseidon and the introduction of Black Manta to the story was great, giving Aquaman a more personal tie to the villains.

The Leagues storyline was written great with each team member having their own part to play in the invasion, as well as all the other heroes on Earth who hadn’t been turned also making an appearance. The Ocean Lords were surprisingly powerful with Commander Drogue being able to beat Superman fairly quickly and Tydde taking away Aquamans abilities.

The art in the story was spectacular, with regards to each individual mutant as well as the Ocean Lords design. Howard Porter drew the waters effects well, with a highlight being Mera and Galls fight.

Final Thoughts

An outstanding issue that continues to raise the stakes of the Drowned Earth Saga. I am excited to see where Tynion and team take the story and what the Tear of Extinction leads to.
