Review
Justice League: Knight Vision Special #1, written by Mark Waid and Joshua Williamson, with art by Miguel Mendonça, colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr., and lettered by Steve Wands, is another strong entry in DC’s All In era, and it’s no surprise with Mark Waid and Joshua Williamson at the helm. Williamson has been instrumental in shaping the DC Universe over the past few years, while Waid continues to remind readers why he remains one of the best superhero writers. The biggest draw of the issue is the pairing between Batman and Lex Luthor. They’re complete opposites, but Waid and Williamson never force the dynamic. Their alliance feels natural to the story, and it’s a fun pairing that plays to both characters’ strengths while teasing bigger things to come.
Miguel Mendonça’s artwork is especially a standout in this issue. His pencils have just the right amount of grit, which highlights the partnership between Batman and Lex and their distinct visual identities and behaviors. Mendonça’s pencils give the issue a sense of danger and uncertainty that just works so well. He keeps every page engaging. In addition to the pencils, Romulo Fajardo Jr.’s colors bring another layer to it all, adding depth and atmosphere without overwhelming the linework. While this story will continue in next month’s Justice League Unlimited, Waid and Williamson cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time. The art does a lot of the heavy lifting, but it is Steve Wands’ lettering that keeps everything moving smoothly, making the dialogue and action equally easy to follow.
Final Thoughts
Justice League: Knight Vision Special #1 does exactly what a special like this should. It tells an entertaining story, pushes the larger All In mission forward, and reminds readers how well Waid and Williamson understand these characters. Combined with excellent work from Miguel Mendonça, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Steve Wands, it's another enjoyable chapter in one of DC's most exciting eras of storytelling.
