Justice League Odyssey #22: The Last Space Ranger

7/10

Justice League Odyssey #22 (Abnett, Richards, Beredo) is a fast-moving issue and a blast to read. It is pure space western fun and hits enough tropes that will please any science-fiction fan. Here’s hoping this isn’t the last we see of this Suzi Starr.

Review

Justice League Odyssey #22 follows Suzi Starr, who readers know as Gamma, and she is the last space ranger in her timeline. The entire opening of the comic is extremely entertaining and cinematic. Suzi confronts a group of aliens in a bar with a speech that could be straight out of Dirty Harry. It is always fun to see smaller characters facing big ones, and seeing Suzi take on the aliens is no different. Jessica Cruz appears out of nowhere and finishes off the bad boys, and is surprised when she sees Gamma… except Gamma is Suzi Starr.

It is really interesting that Gamma doesn’t remember Cruz if this is the same timeline. This arc is dealing with time, so that usually means nothing makes sense. It would be pretty neat if Cruz returned back to her time and somehow Gamma remembered her. When dealing with time, especially with Epoch, nothing seems random. At the same time, it does feel like Cruz was sent back to Suzi, not Gamma, for a reason. It very well might mean it was just to get back to her time, but the way the issue ends could suggest that this isn’t the end of Suzi. The rest of the issue in Suzi’s ship is extremely entertaining. The ship, for one, reminds me of the camper ship from Space Balls. The ship is under attack and Cruz must man the gunner like its straight out of A New Hope. This issue hits all of the spots for a fun space adventure. To top it all off, Suzi sacrificing herself and Mr. Tallbot, her robot, to save Cruz felt like it was straight out of Interstellar. The issue ends with Suzi flying her ship to the edge of time where we start to see time glitching and breaking up, but we don’t see the end. I am hoping we see more of this Suzi Starr, the last space ranger.
